Jan Vertonghen, the Red Devils’ record international, will start working for the Belgian Football Association in January, according to Het Laatste Nieuws . The former defender is completing a three-month internship as part of a UEFA training program for former professional footballers. He will work closely with technical director Vincent Mannaert.
Vertonghen ended his playing career at the end of last season and has since used his extra free time to spend with his family and build his professional future. The former international is enrolled in a UEFA program designed for players with extensive international careers.
This program introduces former professional footballers to the many layers of modern football, with a focus on management, policymaking, and governance. A three-month internship is part of the course, and Vertonghen has chosen to complete it with the Belgian Football Association.
“A unique opportunity to deepen my experience.”
In a statement, the former defender for clubs including RKC Waalwijk, Ajax, and Spurs stated that he is consciously taking the time to further develop his skills. “After a career spanning almost twenty years, I am now consciously taking the time to further my education and maintain my connection to the world of football,” he said.
He speaks with gratitude about the opportunity he has been given. “The UEFA program is a unique chance to deepen my experience and broaden my horizons beyond the pitch. I would like to thank the KBVB and Vincent Mannaert in particular for the opportunity to participate and learn within the new sporting policy.”
