Hugo Viana to leave Sporting to become general director of Manchester City
Portuguese Hugo Viana will leave his role as Sporting’s sporting director at the end of the season to take on the role of Manchester City’s director of football, the two clubs announced today.
“During this period, Sporting CP was planning and preparing a new organizational structure in professional football, with the role of sporting director ceasing to exist”, they added.
Former Portuguese international Hugo Viana has held the position of Sporting’s sporting director since 2018, when Frederico Varandas was elected president, after also having held the same role at Belenenses in 2017/18.
Hugo Viana’s departure will be filled by the arrival of Bernardo Palmeiro, who provided executive advice to the administration and the football department between 2020 and 2023, and who “will take on, next season, the role of general director of football and together with the current director of scouting, Flávio Costa, will report directly to the president, Frederico Varandas”, inform the ‘lions’.
In addition to continuing to count on “Hugo Viana’s commitment and total dedication until the last minute of the game this season”, Sporting states that the current sporting director is “involved in the transition process towards the future organizational model” of professional football.
“Sporting CP recognizes the central role that Hugo Viana played in creating a high-level professional structure in the club’s football and is determined to continue the path of growth and success seen in recent seasons,” the statement concluded.
For its part, Manchester City – which features Portuguese internationals Rúben Dias, Matheus Nunes and Bernardo Silva – confirmed the departure of Txiki Begiristain and the arrival of Hugo Viana as general director for football at the ‘citizens’ from 2025/26, revealing that the Portuguese and the Spaniard will “collaborate in the months leading up to the summer of 2025, in order to guarantee a safe transition” in the role.
