Italy-Belgium, the slow motion: Bastoni-Openda risk penalty. The Var helps us

Italy-Belgium: From the field, Eskas had not noticed the obvious serious foul committed, in the 38th minute of the first half, by Pellegrini on Theate, but after the On Field Review the referee immediately corrected his decision by transforming the yellow card, initially extracted, into a red one. Therefore, the call of the Var Riley was faultless. All the criteria for the expulsion were there: exposed studs on the Achilles tendon, speed and intensity of the intervention.

Risk of penalty

More than one doubt remains about the intervention, in the 18th minute of the second half, by Bastoni on Openda. The impression is that the Italian hits the opponent on the foot and not the ball. A penalty could have been given, not a red card because Dogso was genuine and therefore the disciplinary sanction would have been decriminalized. On a disciplinary level, in the second half, Eskas forgets two warnings to Doku and Tielemans.

Cambiaso’s goal

Cambiaso’s goal was regular, as he was kept in play by De Cuyper when Dimarco’s assist was played. Retegui’s position was also regular on 2-0 and Belgium’s goals.

VAR: Riley 5.5

Italy-Belgium: rightly points out the seriousness of Pellegrini’s tackle on Theate with the call to the OFR, while he stops at a check for Bastoni’s tackle in the Italy penalty area.
