James and James make History Today
LeBron James and his son LeBron James Jr. have made NBA history together. As the first father-son duo, the two were on the field together on Sunday (local time) in the Los Angeles Lakers’ test game against the Phoenix Suns. In the 114-118 defeat, however, it became clear that the senior still clearly sets the tone on the court. While his son remained without points, the four-time league MVP advanced to his team’s best scorer.
For LeBron James, it was the first minutes of pre-season against the Suns, his son called Bronny had already made his first appearance for the Lakers on Friday. The senior, who is starting his 22nd season and celebrates his 40th birthday in December, had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Bronny missed his only attempt from the field during his 13 minutes of play, but recorded two rebounds.
The modest yield of the son did not detract from the father’s joy about the joint performance. “It’s pretty cool for both of us – and of course especially for our family,” said LeBron James: “It’s definitely a moment I’ll never forget.” For him as a father, this means “everything,” says James, who also wants to play games with his son in the regular season.
“He’s just my teammate”
The first chance to do so will be at the start on October 22 (local time) in the home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. James’ son said: “I was pretty excited. I always think: That’s my father! But when I play, he’s just my teammate. That’s all.”
In any case, the list of father-son duos in US professional sports is short. In baseball, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. In the early 90s for the Seattle Mariners. In hockey, Gordie Howe played with his sons Marty and Mark in the late 70s on a team for both the Houston Aeros and the Hartford Whalers.
