Vitinha “ready” to return to starting line-up in Portugal

Midfielder Vitinha said on Monday that he is “ready” to return to the starting line-up for Portugal in the Nations League match against Scotland, and acknowledged his desire to always be on the pitch.

“I still consider myself a young player. It bothers me to be out. I always want to help, whether at club or national team. When it happens it’s difficult. Let’s wait until tomorrow (Tuesday). I’m ready”, said Vitinha. The 24-year-old was speaking to journalists at the press conference ahead of the match against the Scots, on matchday four of Group A1 of the Nations League, in a small room at the St. Mirren Stadium, around 20 kilometres from Glasgow.Vitinha missed the match against Scotland (2-1) at the Estádio da Luz in September due to injury, and was an unused substitute last Saturday against Poland (3-1) in Warsaw.

“We have a lot of quality in all sectors, but in midfield there’s a lot of it. It’s wonderful to have so many quality players in one position. We have to be at our best at all times, we have to perform at all times, otherwise we’ll be left out”, he said.

Regarding the clash with Scotland, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder said that the players received advice on how to deal with the environment they will encounter at Hampden Park and explained that Portugal will have to have greater control of the ball to ‘escape’ the more physical game of the British.

“We know what we have to do”, he concluded.

Scotland-Portugal is scheduled for Tuesday, at 19:45, at Hampden Park, in Glasgow, and will be refereed by Belgian Lawrence Visser.
